As teachers in a specific discipline (chemistry and music) how would you integrate a student who was an English language learner into your classroom? What strategies would you use to have the student be integrated and engaged in your class? What are some teaching strategies that we have discussed in this class that you might apply to your lessons in order to make the ELL student understand the material and feel comfortable in your classroom?

Personally, I would try to see if a teacher who teaches the language is present in the building. I would try to cooperate with them in order to mold aspects of my lesson in a way that will benefit the student. I could give the students 2 forms of the same worksheet, one in their native language, and one in English in order to allow them to easily complete the material, but to also encourage them to become familiar with the language. I would also make portions of my presentations or lessons in their native language as well, if it is possible with the program I am useing. Beyond this, I would try to be in contact with the parents as well in order to create an environment that would benefit the student and to give them the best education that I could provide them

DeleteFor music, luckily music can be understood in any language. So the reading and playing wont be the problem. For teaching music in another language, I would try to find reference sheets with the translations of the vocabulary and the lessons. I would also hope there is a translator but if not I would ask the spanish teacher in the school for some general help on any translations I can't find. I might also chooser repertoire that either has spanish lyrics or is written in spanish. Most music is in latin and italian and a lot of the terms can be found in the spanish language.

DeleteI would integrate an english language learner student into my classroom by using the comprehensible input method. It is where you shorten your directions, conversations, etc. to minimal words so the student can keep up with what is being said. A strategy I would use is the I do, we do, you do. This way the student is integrated into the class and not lagging behind, following what other students do.
