Understanding and internalizing new vocabulary is important for students' overall understanding of new subject matter. Chapter 8 provided us with many activities and strategies that we can apply in order to introduce new vocabulary to students in our classes. It is suggested that the use of these vocabulary strategies will (hopefully) help promote retention of the new information that students are about to learn. Which of the activities or strategies introduced in Chapter 8 would you use within your classroom when you begin a new topic or a new chapter? What, in your estimation, are its benefits?
Which of these Chapter 8 suggested strategies would you prefer not to use? Why?
The activity introduced in Chapter 8 that I would use within my classroom when I begin a new topic or a new chapter would be Concepts. The benefits of introducing Concepts is that it is similar to a schemata meaning that it is bound by a a hierarchy of relationships.
ReplyDeleteThe strategy that I would prefer to not use would be Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy since the students read and discuss an assignment first before knowing what the words mean.

I would use the graphic organizer strategy in a classroom. It helps students learn terms and organize their thoughts while reading so it will greater their understanding.
ReplyDeleteI would not use the brainstorming strategy. Since not every student may have prior knowledge of the concept they may not be able to participate in the conversation.
