Sarah has a question about political issues in the classroom

If the topic of the Ukrainian-Russian War came up in your class how would you handle this issue?  If your students wanted to discuss the topic in order to get some answers, how would you proceed?  Would you refuse to discuss the problem because you are not the social studies teacher?  Would you prepare a quick lesson plan in your head and assign some background information for your students to view? Do you think that topics such as this are worth discussing?   And finally, should teachers discuss serious issues in their classes?   Why or why not?

  1. I would handle this issue by stating what has been said on the news and officially approved platforms. I would avoid any opinionated responses or answers as they can lead to disagreements or arguments. I would inform the students if they have any in depth questions to ask the social studies or history teachers that can give more in depth history into the issue/tension between countries. I would not prepare a lesson plan as I would not be able to accurately do into the issue as I do not teach history. I feel these topics are worth discussing but must be handled with care as they can get out of hand or go into a discussion that many may not be ready for. Teachers should make an effort to mention issues such as this in their classes.

  2. If the topic of the Ukrainian-Russian war came up in my class I would try my best to educate my students with anything that I know. I would get well informed before any class because I know that students would want to talk about it and learn why the war is happening. I would not spend as much time talking about it because I'm sure in a history class the professor would probably touch more on that discussion. But I would try to inform and educate my students about what is happening as well so that they know the actual facts.

  3. If the topic came up, as it is very big in the news right now, I would not back away from discussing how my students feel about the situation, but avoid getting political, as I am not in the position to do so. Since I am not in a way a political educator or a history educator, I would most likely not make a lesson plan on this topic. I believing something as big as this must be talked about, whether to inform students or comfort them on the subject, as the world is growing around them and they have the right to understand what is happening in the world.

Laura has a final question about ED348

What is your biggest takeaway from having attended this class (ED 348) this semester?   What have you learned?
